Europe is creating the first inter-country wine PDO Maasvallei Limburg
Europe is creating the first inter country wine PDO Maasvallei Limburg. The appellation type wine region will span both Netherlands and Belgium. This is a marked change for Europe who in the past has created wine regions that are within a single country. The move is suppose to show that the wine region represents the soils and climate and not the national boundaries. This is the first time that a PDO has spanned such multiple nations. Historically, regions such as Tokaji, which was made over multiple countries, Hungary and Slovakia, had been split to honour county boundaries.
