Oregon wines with David Adelsheim and Mike Coveney

We meet with David Adelsheim of Adelsheim Vineyard and Mike Coveney of Hilltop Wines to find out about the wines of Oregon in the United States.

Adelsheim winery was established by David Adelsheim and his wife in 1972 in Oregon's north Willamette Valley. Mike Coveney is from Hilltop Wines who represent Oregon wines in the UK.

Oregon's wine industry took off in the 1970s and 1980s and is best known for Pinot Noir, grown in the cooler parts of the Oregon wine region. In the warmer climates to the east and south of the state there is more focus on Bordeaux varieties and more recently Spanish (Tempranillo) and Rhone (Syrah) grapes. Oregon state is situated on the west coast between the states of Washington and California. It has a diverse climate, from coastal to continental and more extreme temperatures in the mountain areas.

About 30-40% of Oregon wines are sold within the state of Oregon with the rest being sold within the United States and only limited quantities exported to Canada, Japan and the UK.

Oregon Pinot Noir is characterised by a fresh, intense fruitiness with less emphasis on the earthy flavours that you find in Burgundies. The cool climate give the wines more acidity than typical of warm climate Pinots and Oregon Pinot Noir has potential to age for 10-15 years.

Our clients say...

I thought the questions were excellent, an extremely valuable revision tool. They really helped highlight areas I thought I had revised and understood but clearly had not, which has enabled me to focus on key areas to revisit and study before going into the exam... I think it is a great resource and an essential revision aid for any WSET 3 students wishing to gain a competitive edge and successfully pass the WSET 3 exam.
