Chris Scott DipWSET takes a look at Grenache - the characteristics, winemaking and the regions/countries where it grows.
Grenache is a late ripening grape needing a long summer to ripen fully. It is drought tolerant but its thin skin makes it susceptible to mould and mildew and therefore it is less suited to wet climates, more suited to hot, dry climates.
Grenache is often blended with other grape varieties and is the most widely planted grape in Southern Rhone. It is used in the production of rose wines and it is one of the grapes in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. In Spain its known as Garnacha and is used in Rioja and Navarra. Outside of Europe you can find Grenache in Australia blended with Shiraz and Mourvedre and as Old Vine Grenache.
I thought the questions were excellent, an extremely valuable revision tool. They really helped highlight areas I thought I had revised and understood but clearly had not, which has enabled me to focus on key areas to revisit and study before going into the exam... I think it is a great resource and an essential revision aid for any WSET 3 students wishing to gain a competitive edge and successfully pass the WSET 3 exam.
