Abbie Bennington DipWSET is a Bordeaux Accredited Educator, a senior tutor for ThirtyFifty, teaching the WSET Level 3 wine course, and also runs her own tasting business, ABV Tastings.
In this first interview, Abbie gives an overview of the Bordeaux region, its climate, geography, soils and key grape varieties. The climate is maritime with high rainfall, leading to disease pressures in the vineyard and challenges at harvest time. The region splits into the right bank and left bank, on either side of the River Garonne and the huge Gironde estuary. The right bank is more inland and Merlot dominates, while the left bank is closer to the Atlantic ocean and encompasses the Médoc region where Cabernet Sauvignon is king. The four key red grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
I thought the questions were excellent, an extremely valuable revision tool. They really helped highlight areas I thought I had revised and understood but clearly had not, which has enabled me to focus on key areas to revisit and study before going into the exam... I think it is a great resource and an essential revision aid for any WSET 3 students wishing to gain a competitive edge and successfully pass the WSET 3 exam.
