Spotlight on Bordeaux Part 2 Bordeaux Classifications
Abbie Bennington DipWSET is a Bordeaux Accredited Educator, a senior tutor for ThirtyFifty, teaching the WSET Level 3 wine course, and also runs her own tasting business, ABV Tastings.
In this second interview, Abbie talks us through the classification system used in the Bordeaux region, from the PDOs at the bottom of the ladder (producing generic AC wines), Bordeaux Superieur and Cru Bourgeois up to the Grand Cru Classé wines (Growths) from the Haut Medoc (left bank), set up way back in 1855.
Premier Cru (1. Grand Cru Classé) – First Growth
Deuxièmes Cru (2. Grand Cru Classé) – Second Growth
Troisième Cru (3. Grand Cru Classé) - Third Growth
Quatrième Cru (4. Grand Cru Classé) – Fourth Growth
Cinquième Cru (5. Grand Cru Classé) – Fifth Growth
Graves, also on the left bank, has its own Grand Cru Classé system, as does Saint Émilion, over on the right bank.
