Douro white wine production increasing

The Douro region is famous for its Port fortified wines, but it also has a history of white wine making. Now wine makers in the area are increasingly producing the white varieties Gouveio, Malvasia Fina, Moscatel, Rabigato, Viosinho and Arinto. Production of white wines increased from 16.67% of total table wines in 2011 to 20.14% in 2015. There is more of a focus in the area now on terroir and traditional wine making methods. But many producers spoke about the difficulty of marketing Douro white wines because of the difficult pronunciation of the grapes which often puts off consumers from purchasing them. That said it seems that consumers are looking for something more exotic and new rather than the usual Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
