UK Wine Show 71 Neal Martin on wine writing
This show was published 05 October 2007
Neal Martin writes for Robert Parker, the renowned American wine commentator to give a British perspective to the erobertparker.com website. We hear how Neal first created his own successful wine site and how his distinctive writing style sets him apart.
Neal started out in wine when working as an administrator for an importer of wine. He attended lots of tastings, read about wine through other wine writers and studied with the Wine and Spirit Education Trust to Diploma level. Started writing about wine for Tom Cannavan website in 2002. started wine-journal in 2003. Had collated 7,000 tasting notes and published them on a site that he created from scratch. Now Neal puts more effort into the creative side of writing - not just a diary (or blog). In beginning the site was visited once a day (mainly by him or his mum). The wine journal site took off when he wrote an account of a tasting banquet at Mouton Rothschild - it caught people's attention and they liked what he was writing. On the internet he is not restricted as he would be writing in print - he can write as much as he wants to with no limitations. The turning point was when the site was re-designed to reflect Neal's personality and style and it started to gain recognition in the wine world. The wine journal site was taken down a month after Neal began writing for erobertparker.com. He knew Robert Parker was aware of his site and was approached by Robert to write for him in 2006. He focuses on fine wine and his writing style is to bring it down to earth and use humour.
The UK Wine Show is sponsored by ThirtyFifty. Our team of wine tasters are busy entertaining and educating UK consumers to help them get the most out of wine.
