Producer

Château Suduiraut is located in the commune of Preignac and its vineyards border those of D’Yquem. The property has a long history stretching back to the 15th century. Only a solitary wing remains of the original chateau, as it was destroyed in the 16th century during the Fronde insurrection. The present chateau was built in the 17th century by the Suduiraut family. The designer of the gardens at Versailles was employed to create the gardens at Suduiraut . It was re-named Cru du Roy in the late 18th century on being taken over by a nephew of the Suduiraut family. In 1855 the estate was classed as a Premier Cru during the official wine classification programme in the Gironde winegrowing area. In 1992 the estate was acquired by AXA which also owns Chateau Pichon-Longueville in Pauillac and Chateau Petit-Village in Pomerol. The area experiences autumnal mists supplied by the Ciron and Garonne rivers, ideal conditions for the development of noble rot. Of the 200 hectare vineyard has 92 hectares under vine. The vineyard sits on a sandy, gravelly soil whose stones capture the heat of the sun, helping the grapes to ripen quickly. The thin soil retains very little water which leads to low yields. The vine has to draw nourishment from deep in the earth and this expresses itself in the wine with strongly-marked minerality. The vineyards are planted with 80% Semillion and 20% Sauvignon Blanc. Although there is also a small amount of Sauvignon Gris planted. The grapes are harvested in several tries and are fermented in 50 hectolitre stainless steel tanks . The wine is then aged in small barriques (33% new) for 24 months. The wines show at their best at least 10 years of bottle age. On rare occasions Chateau Suduiraut also produces a special wine Cuvee Madame, which usually has much higher sugar levels. In 1982 and 1989 the estate released a special wine made from their best vines, Suduiraut Crème de Tete. The property makes a second wine, Castelnau de Suduiraut and a dry white Bordeaux wine, S de Suduiraut. The estate launched a third wine in 2011, designed to reach younger customers, Lions de Suduiraut, which is produced from almost 100% Semillon and a touch of Sauvignon Blanc to create the blend.
