Our Credentials
As well as being an Approved Programme Provider (APP) for the WSET we believe that the best way of understanding wine is to learn from those who are not only great presenters of wine, but also have a deep understanding of the subject. All our tutors have the prestigious WSET Certified Educator qualification meaning they can teach the full range of WSET Courses, in addition the majority of our tutors have the WSET Level 4 Diploma. These are well above the requirements to teach Level 1 and Level 2, but this depth and our engaging presentation style we hope will bring wine alive for you.
What is WSET?
WSET stands for Wine and Spirit Education Trust. They are a non-profit training organisation that is owned and operated by the wine trade for the development of wine in the trade. The qualifications are overseen by Ofqual, the UK government body for creating nationally recognised qualification. The WSET courses are part of the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QFC) and are recognised as credits in many other national qualifications.
The WSET qualifications are run throughout the world from America to China, India to Italy and are recognised in many countries. In the UK the WSET forms the backbone of the wine trade.
WSET was founded in 1969 as an educational charity by four organisations to train people in the British wine and spirits trade. The four founding companies are The Vintners Company, The Worshipful Company of Distillers, Institute of Masters of Wine and the Wine and Spirit Association of Great Britain.
Initially the WSET was set up solely to train the trade. However in 1991 the charter was changed to allow the general public to study for WSET qualification. Now globally, roughly 20-25% of people taking their courses are consumers.
Listen to Ian Harris the Chief Executive of WSET talk about the organisation he runs. If you want to learn more about wine the UK Wine Show podcast is a great tool to accompany your studies and shows our commitment as a company to further wine education.
How do the training courses work?
The natural progression through wine courses for those who wish to become experts on wine (or simply further their knowledge) is:
- Level 1 (Foundation) - 1 day course, suitable for wine enthusiasts, bar & restaurant staff, wine retail staff.
- Level 2 (Intermediate) - 3 day course, suitable for wine enthusiasts, bar & restaurant staff, wine retail staff.

- Level 4 Diploma - 2 year course, suitable for wine professionals, head sommeliers at top restaurants, wine buyers etc.
- Master of Wine - 3+ years. The highest academic achievement in wine. It is not part of the WSET program but the Institute of Masters of Wine are a founding member of WSET and the Diploma is a typical prerequisite. Only available for members of the wine trade.
