- UK Wine Show 146 Gavin Partington of the WSTA on minimum pricing
Overview
Gavin Partington is spokesperson for the Wine & Spirit Trade Association (WSTA). In this interview we discuss the Scottish governments proposal to introduce a minimum price for alcohol and ban irresponsible promotions. The WSTA is opposed to the plans in principle and believe it is wrong for the government to intervene in the pricing mechanism of the drinks industry. They acknowledge that in parts of UK and particularly in Scotland there is a strong correlation between alcohol and issues such as poverty, social decline, unemployment and family breakdown. However they say minimum pricing will serve only to punish the majority of normal consumers rather than address the underlying causes of alcohol misuse amongst a minority.
