Stags Leap in Napa Valley received its official government AVA designation in 1989 (Stags Leap District). It rose to prominence based on The 1976 Tasting, when one of its leading producers, Stag Leap Wine Cellars's Cabernet was voted by both French and English judges as the best, beating more famous Bordeaux rivals.
The name comes from a range of basalt rocks on the eastern side of the valley. These heat during the day and radiate warmth that is moderated by marine breezes in the afternoon.
Soils are moderately fertile, volcanic, gravel-loams on the valley floor with rockier particularly well drained terrain on the heavily sheltered hillsides.
