- Brendan OToole of Summergate Fine Wines on the Chinese wine market
Overview
Brendan O'Toole of Summergate Fine Wines talks to us about the expanding wine market in mainland and greater China.
Summergate was established in 1999 by Brendan and business partner Ian Ford with offices in Shanghai and Bejing initially. They opened an office in Hong Kong in 2009. Summergate imports and distributes wine into the entire mainland China and greater China (Hong Kong and Macau) and provide full sales & marketing support. The majority of sales are to bars, restaurants, hotels (about 60%) but the retail sector is growing and supermarkets are becoming a more important channel as consumers begin to take more of an interest in drinking wine at home. Its an emerging white collar, middle class Chinese population who are now buying wine as well as the traditional wealthy collectors and connoisseurs. The market has expanded massively over the last 10 years, dominated by wines from France and Australia.
