- Simon Back on the Environment PET and black empowerment in South Africa
Overview
Backsberg was the first carbon neutral winery in South Africa and has launched PET packaging in partnership with South African retailer Pick & Pay. Lighter than glass, PET has environmental benefits and cost savings but it has a much shorter shelf life. Simon talks about this latest initiative but also goes on to tell us how the winery has faced up to other issues such as black empowerment. In the late 1990s the winery sought to break the traditional bond between employer and employee by providing an opportunity to become independent. Called Freedom Road, the winery rented out land to workers to let them plant their own vineyards and sell wine, the use the proceeds to build their own houses. Many workers stayed as employees but others were able to branch out and break the bond, to go their own way.
