- Chris Powell of the Local Wine School
Overview
Chris Powell runs the Local Wine School franchise which he started in Newcastle in 1999 as a career change from engineering. He did a few years at Oddbins and studied for his WSET qualifications before setting the first school up. Today the Newcastle Wine School has 4,500 customers local to Newcastle, many of whom are loyal repeat customers. Chris sold the first Local Wine School franchise in Birmingham in 2008 and after its success rolled out the franchise model to other parts of the UK. There are now 12 franchisees which are growing rapidly, running their own courses and also WSET, for the more serious wine enthusiasts wanting to take their knowledge to the next level. Chris talks a little about plans to expand in the States and how he has sold the Newcastle Wine School to focus on the franchise business.
