- Duncan Brown on Brown Brothers Unusual Grape Varieties
Overview
Duncan Brown of Brown Brothers talks us through the Brown Brothers range and price ladder. They have over 100 wines and grow over 50 grape varieties.
Their entry level wine are fruity and fruit forward styles and these wines form the biggest part of the range. The next level up is the John Charles Brown Explorer Series with varieties such as Tarango, Dry Muscat, Pinot Gris. Next up the ladder is the 1889 range with single vineyard single varietal wines followed by Limited Release Single Block wines only available through the cellar door. At the top end is the Patricia range which is not made every vintage and includes sparkling, dry whites, red and dessert wines.
Brown Brothers take innovation seriously: every year in their kindergarten winery they produce 8 new grape varieties which are vinified in 6 different ways. They then select 3 wines to sample with the public at the cellar door to see what works and what doesn't. This year they have tried Grillo (failure), Gruner Veltliner and Gamay (star performer).
