- The Business of Chapel Down with Mark Harvey
Overview
Mark Harvey is the chief commercial officer at Chapel Down responsible for sales and marketing. Chapel Down is the largest English wine producer with 3 different business units - wine, beers and spirits. The first vines were planted in Tenterden in 1977 but the real turning point was in 2001 when CEO Frazer Thompson joined. Frazer pioneered crowdfunding to raise funds for the winery in the early days which proved a successful model for Chapel Down. Chapel Down is now listed on the Nxchange (Gusbourne is the only other listed UK producer).
The shareholders (some 4000) have really contributed to the success, encouraged to support and spread the word by receiving incentives such as discounts (assuming you own sufficient shares).
Wine is by far their biggest category accounting for roughly 60%, followed by beer 30% (Curious Brew brand) and more recently spirits.
