- Low and No Alcohol Wines with Prof Monika Christmann
Overview
In this first interview Chris talks to Prof Monika Christmann, head of the Institute of Oenology at the Geisenheim University in the Rhine Valley, Germany about no and low alcohol wines, touching on some of the processes in the winery to remove alcohol. She tells us how the market is splitting, with products containing no alcohol (de-alcoholised can contain up to 0.5% alc) and also the big opportunity for wines with lower alcohol but that are not completely alcohol free but around say 5%.
EU laws are going to change to allow wines to be made at below 8.5% before they are de-alcoholised, thus enabling low alcohol wines to be produced. Monika has been involved in various trials using different methods to do things such as filtering out sugar. Next week we'll be discussing the 3 main techniques.
