Robb Merchant of White Castle Vineyard in Wales

This show was published Saturday, June 11, 2022

Overview

Robb Merchant of White Castle Vineyard in Wales located in a small village between Abergavenny and Ross-on-Wye, east of the mountains. The mountains create a warm, dry micro-climate more suitable for growing vines vs the prevailing rain that typifies Wales.

In Wales there are around 40 vineyards totalling 70 hectares. Robb has 10,000 vines planted across 3.5 hectares and they produce 4 reds - Pinot Noir Precoce (known as Frühburgunder in Germany), Rondo, Regent and Cabernet Franc. Their Pinot Noir 2018 won a gold medal at Decanter and the 2019 vintage has won a silver. His focus is on producing quality, premium wines rather than going for volume and the winery is part of a group of 'special interest' agricultural producers that receive some support from the Welsh government for marketing to help promote their wines.
