Alberto Orengia on Wine Exports to China Part 2

This show was published Friday, May 26, 2023

Overview

Alberto Orengia is from Piemonte, Italy but is now based in Hong Kong representing the famous Frescobaldi wine family. They have 9 wine estates in various regions across Tuscany. In this interview we explore the different sales channels in China which are unlegislated so you can sell across different channels across the whole of China. E-commerce presents importers and brand owners with the challenge of price comparisons with the on-trade and wholesale channels and so larger producers might market a brand specifically for this channel if the opportunity is worthwhile. We talk about margins and mark-ups for the on trade and off trade and the different models for higher end and mainstream players. Alberto explains how the punitive tariffs that have been applied to Australian wine imports in the last few years have affected sales and Australia's market dominance (Australia lost 85% of volume exported to China).
