- The Wines of Ukraine with Victoria Agromakova and Svitlana Tsybak
Overview
The Wines of Ukraine is a trade body which was created in 2020 and is headed up by Victoria Agromakova and Svitlana Tsybak to promote Ukrainian wines around the world.
The Black Sea region is by far the biggest and can be divided into 3 main sub-regions of Kherson, Odessa (also Odesa) and Mykolaiv. Odessa is known for its sparkling wines and white wine and is further divided into smaller sub-regions. Mykolaiv has many small experimental craft wineries and is more red wine production. In Kherson the biggest plantings are of Riesling and Sukholimanskiy with a smaller amount of red produced. Before 2014 Crimea was Ukraine's largest wine region.
The second biggest is the mountainous Zakarpattia wine region located in the West on the border with Hungary and Slovakia and, with its proximity to Hungary, not surprisingly is the main region for fortified and dessert wines in Ukraine, with plantings of aromatic grape varieties.
Zaporizhzhya is the smallest region and is located in the South.
Ukraine produces white, red, sparkling with some local grape varieties such as Odesa Black (red grape), Sukholimanskiy White and Telti-Kuruk (white grape). Most of the vineyards in Ukraine are planted with international grape varieties. The most popular white varieties are Aligote, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Traminer. The most common red varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Saperavi.
