The Effects of the Russian War on Ukraine Wines with Victoria Agromakova and Svitlana Tsybak

This show was published Friday, July 7, 2023

Overview

In the second interview with Victoria Agromakova and Svitlana Tsybak of the Wines of Ukraine trade body we find out how Ukraine wineries have been affected by the Russian invasion.

In the Kherson region the left bank of the Dnieper river is still occupied and many vineyards and craft wineries have been lost to the war and the flooding of the Kakhovka dam.

On the right bank of Kherson, liberated by Ukraine in November 2022, the oldest winery in Ukraine, Prince Trubetskoy, has had historic buildings, vineyards and wine supplies destroyed and since being liberated the area continues to be under constant fire from Russia. The land is heavily mined and will take decades to de-mine.

In the Zaporizhzhia region there is no access to the vineyards and therefore no news on what is happening in the occupied territories except that a number of wineries have been destroyed and looted.

Though Mykolaiv has not been under Russian occupation, infrastructure supporting other businesses and factories have been destroyed in the region, but wineries have still been able to harvest grapes and produce wine. Odessa is also okay, as is the mountainous Zakarpattia region. But it is dangerous and difficult for workers to stay and the logistics of bottling wine is a huge challenge.
