- MW tasting Exam with Jennifer Simonetti-Bryan MW
Overview
Jennifer Simonetti-Bryan is based in Southern California and became a Master of Wine (MW) in 2008. She has been an examiner for the MW Institute but is now more focused on teaching. In 2018, Jennifer launched an online wine school for WSET Diploma and Master of Wine candidates to help with blind tasting technique www.masterofwineonline.com
The MW tasting exam covers 36 wines, where you need to write essays identifying the grape variety, origin or style and explaining why. It is not just about getting the conclusions correct but about how you weave different arguments together, as such. When grading essays, points are given for correct information but also, overall, for how coherent your argument and overall conclusion is. Flights are made up in a number of ways so it is crucial to check past papers to get a feel for how wines are grouped and practice your blind tasting in the same way e.g. by grape variety, region/country, winemaking style, vintage.
