- Tasting Techniques for MW and Diploma Students with Jennifer Simonetti-Bryan MW
Overview
Jennifer Simonetti-Bryan is a Master of Wine and has marked MW tasting exams. We talk to her about exam techniques and different methods for approaching blind tasting exams.
Captain Obvious method - writing down the obvious tasting notes that you instantly recognise
WSET method - long form sentences which take too long for MW exam (you only have 11 minutes per wine)
Grid system - use columns such as colour, aroma, body, tannins, then using numbers to rate each wine on a scale
Moss Cross system - from Antony Moss MW - basically, write an X on your scrap paper for each wine and on the cross, note down key markers for the wine
We discuss ways to improve your palate including component tasting, tasting within flights such as by origin, vintage, grape variety.
