- Regenerative Viticulture Part 2 with Becky Sykes
Overview
In this episode we drill down into 4 issues associated with regenerative viticulture:
Fungicides - reducing the use while protecting the grapes from disease, e.g. through grape selection to use hybrid grapes that are more resistant to fungal disease known as PIWI varieties.
Herbicides - designed to control weeds, they have a negative impact on the soil biome - by locking up nutrients and stop them getting to the vine. Other methods of weed control are encouraged in the vineyard (e.g. sheep grazing, strimming, mowing, mulching).
Ploughing - the less you compact the soil the better, e.g. minimising tractor use by changing practices, such as shallow tillage, between the vines.
Tree planting among the vines - the tree roots go deep into the ground, storing lots of water and helping the microclimate in the summer.
