- Regenerative Viticulture Part 3 with Becky Sykes
Overview
In this final episode with Becky Sykes we delve into water management as part of regenerative viticulture and think about different climatic zones, depending on whether it is a wet, rainy region or a dry region suffering droughts. We discuss irrigation and how vines can be trained to help the vine's roots grow deep into the soil.
Regenerative viticulture is about adopting best practices but also uses new technology to manage the vineyard, e.g. moisture-sensing technology for drip irrigation, meaning you only use water when you really need to.
Bio-diversity below ground and above ground are equally important. Above ground refers to the creatures such as predatory insects, birds, bats and other wildlife in the vineyard that can help control vine disease, so encouraging a strong bio-diversity is key.
Certification bodies and schemes do exist for regenerative viticulture for producers to get certified by complying with rules in order to validate any claims they might want to make. There are 5 or 6 schemes, the biggest of which is the Regenerative Organic Alliance Scheme which specifies you must be organic. Regenerative Organic Certified (ROC) is another and also the Regenerative Viticulture Alliance. A Greener World has just certified the first vineyard in France and there is Regenified set up by Dave Brown, a pioneer of regenerative viticulture (watch Netflix documentary Kiss the Ground). Finally, Land to Market have just certified a vineyard in the US.
