Overview

Sam Doncaster works with the Freytag grapevine nursery in Germany, who grow and supply grapevine cuttings across Europe. In this first episode we discuss the history to hybrid grape crossings and vine experimentation pre and post-phylloxera. In actual fact when Europeans began moving to America from the 1860s, taking grapevines with them, they found Vitis Vinifera didn't always grow, and had already started to breed hybrids before phylloxera hit European vineyards and grafting Vitis Vinifera onto American rootstocks became common practice.
