- Richard Bampfield MW on the Sustainable Wine Roundtable
Overview
Richard Bampfield MW has worked in wine industry since leaving university 40 years back and now consults to clients including Lidl and various wine producers. In the last 5 years, Richard has branched out to tackle sustainability in wine, bringing together major players in the industry. The Sustainable Wine Roundtable (SWR) takes a holistic view, talking around the table with members from all parts of the value chain, to bring about change and take action to make wine more sustainable.
We talk about issues such as packaging, for example, the lightweight bottle accord. The initiative has the support of several retailers from around the world who have agreed as a collective to reduce the weight of glass wine bottles by 25% by 2026 (reducing carbon emissions by up to 15%).
Environmental, social and economics are the three pillars of being a sustainable business, hence their organisation has a focus on social welfare and labour standards of wine businesses as well as the environmental and economic aspects of sustainability.
The SWR is an international organisation that is UK based with wide-ranging international membership. For more info visit www.swroundtable.org
Note: the three pillars are
Environmental sustainability - managing resources and reducing pollution.
Social sustainability - focusing on equity, justice, and community well-being.
Economic sustainability - balancing profit with environmental and social considerations.
