- Decanter Wine Awards with Michelle Cherutti-Kowal MW
Overview
Michelle Cherutti-Kowal MW is a regional chair for Tuscany at the Decanter Wine Awards. We talk to her about the process of selecting the panels and judges and how the judging process works.
Each panel typically has a regional chair, a senior judge and regular judges. The wines are scored on a 100 point system, with Gold medals awarded at 95 and above and Platinum at 97 and above. Silver is 90 to 94, Bronze is 86 to 89 and Commended 80 to 84. They have a value category for wines at £14.99 and under which are scored slightly differently due to their price.
We discuss the judging process, from how they go about eliminating wines that are not medal-worthy to awarding gold and platinum medals by tasting them twice. In the second week, the golds are all re-tasted by the regional chairs and co-chairs, then either stay as gold, go down to silver or up to platinum.
