Overview

Olivia Mason is the senior awards marketing manager at Decanter and manages the website, communications and promotion of the Decanter World Wine Awards.

The competition gives medal winning producers worldwide promotional opportunities through their association with Decanter, a globally recognised media company.

In terms of the organisation of wines received, the entries close in March and then from March to May the wines are received into a London warehouse to be categorised and bagged up ready for judging. The volume of entries amounts to 18,000 wines with judging over 6 days, 250 judges from 33 countries on 8 panels. This works out to c.80 wines per panel, per day to be judged. Producers send in 4 bottles of each wine entered but Decanter also take a stand at international wine exhibitions such as Wine Paris and Vinitaly, enabling producers to drop off wines if they prefer, instead of shipping. After the judging, much of the leftover unopened wine is auctioned for charity. Leftover wine from opened bottles of gold medal wines is made available for staff to taste and the glass packaging is recycled.
