- Grafting Vines with Sam Doncaster Part 3
Overview
In this third interview with Sam Doncaster we conclude our series on grafting vines by looking at the end of the process of making grafted grape vine plants which happens at the end of the year in December ready for sale in January (the best time to order your grafted vines). Before shipping some growers hot-water treat the vines to eliminate any virus that might have grown within the plant, but Sam isn't an advocate of this method. The vines are sent out in cartons ready to be planted in the vineyard. This can be a mechanical process using a tractor or planting machine, depending on how the ground has been prepared. Can be planted by hand, e.g. with a hand-held augur, with the roots pointing downwards. In the first year the young vine wants to see his master once a week, in the second year, the vine wants to see his master twice a week, but in years 3-4 and after, there is still maintenance but less frequent now the vine is established.
