Overview
Libby Brodie is a wine columnist for City AM, wine writer and YouTuber. Libby first got into wine in 2020 when she started a consultancy writing, speaking and hosting wine events and is brand ambassador for Wines of Lisboa.
The Lisboa wine region is located to the north of Lisbon with 10,000 hectares of vineyards, stretching 130km along the Atlantic coast. Lisboa is the largest wine region in Portugal with a Mediterranean climate and varied altitudes, created by the rolling hills. The hot, dry summers are offset by the cooling influence of the Atlantic. The ocean plays a significant role in shaping the wine styles, with the cooling sea breezes pushing the humidity off the vines, helping grapes retain the freshness and giving the wines a refreshing salinity.
The two main soils are clay-limestone and sandy soil. Both of these are alkaline soils, providing excellent drainage, water permeability and contributing to the minerality and complexity of the wines produced in the region. The Colares sub-region has sandy soils that means traditional viticulture practices can be preserved through their resistance to pests like phylloxera.
The main indigenous grape varieties in Lisboa include Arinto, Vital, Fernão Pires for the whites and for reds, Castelão, Tinta Miúda, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional. Leve Lisboa wine is a low alcohol, very fresh wine that is a highlight of the region and very much on trend right now and there are a growing number of producers making excellent Pet Nats.
