- Wines of Lisboa with Libby Brodie on Food Pairings
Overview
Libby and Chris taste four wines from Lisboa and discuss various food matchings for each one.
Falatório Organic Rosé 2023
Pair with: Carapaus (Mackerel) with potatoes and roasted pepper salad is a classic Portuguese dish. The grilled mackerel is served alongside boiled potatoes, which absorb the flavours of the fish and olive oil. Complementing the meal is a vibrant roasted pepper salad, made with sweet red and green peppers, onions, olive oil, vinegar, and a touch of garlic. This combination creates a simple yet flavourful meal that highlights the freshness of the ingredients and the essence of traditional Portuguese home cooking.
Quinta Do Pinto Grande Escolha 2018 white (Viognier, Rousanne, Marsanne blend)
Pair with: Caldeirada - a traditional Portuguese fish stew, celebrated for its rich flavours and rustic charm. This hearty dish is made by simmering a variety of fresh fish and seafood-such as cod, monkfish, and clams—together with potatoes, tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, and garlic. The ingredients are layered in a pot and slowly cooked with olive oil, white wine, bay leaves, and a blend of aromatic herbs and spices. The result is a comforting and flavourful stew that perfectly captures the essence of Portuguese coastal cuisine. Caldeirada is often enjoyed with crusty bread to soak up the delicious broth.
Lisboa Bonita red - M&S/Ocado
Pair with: Cozido à Portuguesa. This hearty dish typically features different cuts of beef, pork, chicken, and a selection of traditional sausages such as chouriço, morcela (blood sausage), and farinheira. The meats are slowly simmered together with an assortment of vegetables like potatoes, carrots, turnips, and cabbage, often accompanied by beans or rice. All ingredients are cooked in the same pot, allowing the flavours to meld and create a savoury, comforting broth. Cozido à Portuguesa is traditionally served on large platters, making it perfect for sharing with family and friends, and is considered one of Portugal’s most emblematic and celebratory dishes.
Carcavelos Villa Oeiras
Pair with: Pastel de Nata - a Portuguese egg custard tart pastry, the thick creamy custard is the perfect match for this delicious fortified wine.
