- Vines in Poly Tunnels with Sandy Booth Part 2
Overview
Sandy Booth is the owner of New Forest Fruit, growing soft fruit on the Beaulieu Estate in Dorset in the South of England, and now experimenting with grapes and making wine. Sandy is using polytunnels to grow vines under, creating a microclimate for the grapes to thrive. We hear how the vines are planted in the nursery before being moved the next year under polytunnels, all of which is done by hand. They re-use coir from growing strawberries and are finding the soil structure and eco-system in the fields is gradually improving. The vines are pollenated by blowing air during flowering in the absence of wind. To protect against frost, if a frost event occurs, they cover the vines with a fleece to bring up the temperature by about 3 degrees and avoid freezing temperatures.
