- The State of the Fine Wine Market with Tom Burchfield Liv-ex - Part 1
Overview
Tom is head of market intelligence at Liv-ex. In this episode he chats to Chris about the trends in the fine wine market and en primeur campaigns over the last 20 years, including over the Covid period.
En primeur sales in the UK have dropped from £240 million in 2009/10 to £60 million in 2024. The big impact has been the withdrawal of buyers from the Chinese market, lack of demand from older collectors and younger generations which is causing a demand/supply imbalance. This has led to stocks of wines that haven't sold being held in warehouses at increased costs. Interestingly, one country that has fared better than most is Italy, due to continued US demand for Tuscan wines.
