- Mireia Torres on Carbon Mitigation
Overview
Mireia Torres is a fifth-generation Torres with a background in chemical engineering and winemaking. She currently works at Torres in production and research as Director of Innovation and Knowledge.
Between 2008 and 2025, Torres has reduced its carbon footprint by 40%, with a new target to cut it by 60% by 2030.
Initiatives include reducing the weight of glass bottles, 95% are now down to 420g per bottle and investing in renewable energy projects at the wineries, cutting energy use by up to 50%. They are also experimenting with solar panels in the vineyards, which provide shade for the vines while generating energy. Different panel densities are being trialled, with results set to be reviewed next year.
We discuss how Torres is improving irrigation efficiency with a buried irrigation system that saves 30% of water compared with conventional drip irrigation, at a similar installation cost. The system uses satellites and sensors to identify which areas of the vineyard need irrigation, allowing for a more precise strategy.
Torres is also planting bushes and trees to improve vineyard health, capturing CO₂ for reuse in the winery, and using UV light to protect vines from fungal diseases and mildew, reducing the need for spraying.
