Changing wine trends in China with Lenz Moser

This show was published Friday, January 30, 2026

Overview

Lenz Moser comes from a long line of Austrian wine producers and has been making wine in China since 2015 at Château Changyu Moser XV.

Lenz brings us up to date with Changyu, founded in 1892 and now the powerhouse of Chinese wine. We explore how the company’s scale, long-term vision and willingness to innovate are driving growth in a rapidly changing market.

We discuss how Covid dramatically reshaped wine consumption in China, accelerating a period of renewal across the industry. One of the most striking shifts has been the surge in white wine consumption, particularly among younger female consumers.

Once a dominant force, super-premium wines for gifting have been heavily restricted by government clampdowns. At the same time, red wine, historically the backbone of Chinese wine production, has declined as younger drinkers increasingly favour white, rosé and sparkling wines.

To adapt, Changyu has pivoted towards white and rosé production alongside its reds, including innovative approaches using Cabernet Sauvignon and the planting and trialling of new white grape varieties to meet evolving consumer tastes.
