- Hawkes Bay Overview with Brent Linn
Overview
Brent Linn is CEO of the Hawkes Bay Vinegrowers Association and also has his own vineyard. In this episode, we take a look at the region in detail. Hawkes Bay is situated on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand. In 2026, the area under vine stands at 4,500 hectares splitting into 1000 ha in red varietals, 1000 in Chardonnay, 1000 in Sauvignon Blanc and the rest made up of other varieties.
We look at the sub-regions which are a diverse mix of coastal, riverside and inland locations. The highest elevation is up to 200 metres above sea level. Hawke's Bay sub-regions include Crownthorpe Terraces, Mangatahi Terraces, Bridge Pa, Gimblett Gravels, Central Hawke's Bay and Dartmoor Valley. Brent tells us more about the styles of wines being produced across the region which prides itself in its diversity rather than one particular grape variety. Growers are experimenting with grapes like Albarino, Chenin Blanc, Tempranillo and Sangiovese and producing lighter, chillable red wine styles.
