Fish become more legless on alcohol
We all know the saying 'as pissed as a newt' but do we really know how newts would behave after a few drinks, or fish for that matter? A study at the New York University Polytechnic Institute of Engineering subjected Zebra fish to varying levels of alcohol and monitored their behaviour. The drunk fish within the shoal became more active, less afraid of unfamiliar things and swam faster. This new, confident zippy fish was then elevated in social status by the sober fish to shoal leader. The sober fish followed the drunk fish around and even upped their pace in an effort to keep up with them. As with humans though, the more alcohol the fish were given the slower they got and they were subsequently dropped as leader. So the next time they’re finding Nemo he’ll be easy to find: he’ll be at the bar drinking a Sea Breeze!
