Some wine spilt in Napa Valley earthquake

A major earthquake in the Napa Valley the other week (25th August) shook many vintners. But the level of damage suffered by vintners very much depended on the terroir in which the grapes are rooted. Rocky soil ideal for powerful red wines seemed to hold up well while spots richer in clay or sand were more inclined to shiver dangerously. Whilst many businesses and hotels suffered millions of dollars of damage reports from wineries suggest merely some bottles and barrels were smashed to the floor in cellars and tasting rooms. Trefethen Family vineyards reported 2 x 20,000 litre tanks of Cabernet were spilt. Whilst Bouchaine Vineyards lost 20 wine barrels. The earthquake was the strongest to hit the Napa Valley in a quarter of a century. But the clean up job is done and growers in the area are getting on with the freshly-started grape harvest known as the crush.
