Wines fetch $6.6m at auction

Roy Welland, the former owner of the now defunct Cru restaurant, auctioned his collection of wines this week in New York. His collection was described as a once in a generation collection and the wine world reacted accordingly. The first auction of his wines at auction house Wally's fetched $6.6m driven by top Burgundy including Domaine Bachelet, Champagne and Piedmont wines among the 1,767 lots offered. A second auction is planned for November in LA. Welland began collecting wine in the 1980s and opened Cru in New York in 2004 with his 65,000 bottle wine collection proving a draw, until it had to close its doors permanently in 2010 after facing an eviction order for non-payment of rent a year earlier in 2009.
