Smaller bag-in-box wines taking off
Boxed wine could be set for a revival with smaller sizes leading the way. Recent Nielsen figures show sales of the 2.25 litre box have grown by volume by 8.7% in the past year. Tesco recently launched smaller 1.5 litre boxed versions of its most popular Tesco Finest wines, 1.5 litres being equivalent to two bottles. The advantage of bag-in-box wines is that they keep fresh for 6 weeks after opening and take up less space in the fridge than 2 bottles. Currently Australia has 22% share of the UK bag-in-box category followed by South Africa with 19.8% and Italy at 16.5%.
