Decanter Wine Awards 2016

Wines from Chile and France led the field in the most prestigious category of the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) 2016, taking six and nine of the ‘platinum – best in show‘ medals. Out of nearly 16,000 wines tasted, only 31 reached the top-tier, previously known as international trophies. Asda managed a Best in Show with their La Moneda Reserva Malbec from Chile for Best Red Single Varietal under £15. Mass producer Wolf Blass also got a best Chardonnay under £15 for their Gold Label 2014 Chardonnay. Marks and Spencer also had a Best in Show for Best White Blend under £15 with a Chilean wine, the De Martino Colina Del Itata 2014 Old Vine Field Blend. Piper-Heidsieck won best in show for Best Sparkling Wine over £15 for their Rare Brut. Croatia also had a Best in Show for Best Red Single Varietal over £15. And Japan won two platinums for wines from the Grace Winery. For the UK - whilst sparkling wines get all the press - the Pinot Noir from Gusbourne and a Chardonnay from Chapel Down performed well. A full list of winners can be found on the Decanter website.
