US retail giants Amazon and eBay continue the expansion into the wine trade
US retail giants Amazon and ebay continue the expansion into the wine trade.
eBbay sellers currently offer wine in the UK, both current vintages and a range of older vintages. Amazon has been selling wine for a while; the wines are predominantly big brands but are fulfilled by Amazon and receive free delivery for Amazon Prime customers. Both retailers are keen to add new brands and methods of sale.
Amazon has applied for a license in Seattle to sell wine in its trial bricks and mortar store. The store when open to the public offers ‘just walk out shopping’ technology concept. Users enter with an app and the shopper and items are tracked in store, shoppers are automatically billed as the leave without going through a checkout.
Both retailers have a number of large international brands selling directly in their stores and eBay in the US has announced a deal with WineDirect adding 1600 small and medium sized producers.
