This week in the press: it's all about different formats for packaging wine
This week in the press it's all about different formats for packaging wine.
Bag in box got much exposure, as the humble brick was heralded as the next big thing in London, with organic bar Weino BIB offering 30 wines on tap for sale either to be consumed in their deli or at home. They claim that the re-use and minimisation of packaging makes boxed wine more environmentally friendly. These higher end, organic Bag in Box wines may be the start of average prices rising, according to Florian Ceschi, director of bulk wine brokers Ciatti Europe. Speaking at the first International Bulk Wine and Spirits Show (IBWSS) in London on 26 February, Florian claimed wine shortages and increasing demand has shifted the buying power of bulk wine from the buyer to the seller, with prices starting to rise.
The UK is not standing still; Bolney Estate is to move over to screw cap for its still wines. They claim that the reliability of screw cap is better for English wines that are designed to be enjoyed within 4 years of production.
And newcomer Rathfinny Estate are taking things a bit further by claiming they will bring back the imperial pint for selling fizz, once Brexit allows the use of non-standard bottles, currently banned in the EU.
