Wine News

UK wine scene continues to evolve with Brits drinking more South American and Portuguese wines.

Portugal's still wines have been growing steady in the UK with Sonia Vieria the marketing director of ViniPortugal claiming that Portugal's sales have been growing in the UK by 8.5% per annum for the last five years, while at the higher end, DO wines were up 33.7% by value in 2018 alone.

Portugal may be making rapid growth in the UK, but Australia still dominates supermarkets and wine shops (known as the off trade) according to Nielsen’s data for the year to 26 Jan 2019. Australia is number one with nearly £1.2 billion of sales, followed by Italy at £702 million. These two are then closely followed by France, USA, Chile and New Zealand. Spain, South Africa, Argentina and British wine complete the top 10 in that order. Chile, Argentina and New Zealand enjoyed the biggest increases in volume in the UK in 2018.
