Spanish Albariño sales continue to grow up 21% in volume.
Spanish Albariño from Rías Baixas DO is growing in the UK by 21% in volume and 23.5% in value.
The UK is Rías Baixas DO's second biggest market behind the USA with sales in the year to August 2019 rising to 1.8 million litres. The fruity, crisp style has found itself the centre of popularity: it lacks the intensity of Sauvignon Blanc, but gives a richer mouthfeel that has been a hit in the UK and USA.
The grape variety is also being planted in Australia, New Zealand and California, so could Albariño be the next big thing? Sales of Italian Pinot Grigio are starting to fall - down by 8% in the off trade and 5% in the on trade as the market is poised on the look out for different options.
