Global wine production dips
The OIV’s State of the World Vine and Wine Sector 2022 report has shown most regions are seeing a decline in area under vine. Total wine produced in 2022 was down by 1% on 2021, the second lowest since 2003. Wine consumption was also the second lowest in the last twenty years, being only marginally higher than Covid-stricken 2020.
International wine trading is down slightly on 2021 but is still high, with prices at their highest levels ever. The big winner is sparkling wine which is up 5% by volume and 18% by value compared to 2021. Still bottled wines are down 4% by volume but up 7% by value.
With record inflation around the world, prices were higher, but most countries saw volume decrease as squeezed consumers moderated their consumption. The big exporting countries of France number 1, Spain number 2 and Italy number 3, all saw volumes decline. New Zealand was one of the few countries to increase volumes (up 3.8%). Australia also saw a slight increase in volumes of 1.3% after China effectively banned Australian wine exports and saw a 17% drop in exports in 2021.
The biggest importer of wine is the US which saw an increase of 3.3% in volume and a 17% increase by value. China, which imports about a fifth of what the US imports, saw volume decreases of 21%. The only country to have a larger drop in the importation of wine was Italy, whose import volume dropped by 29%.
