China and Australia negotiate wine tariffs
Negotiations are underway between China and Australia over wine tariffs.
When China slapped punitive tariffs on Australian wine as part of their economic war to subdue dissenters of their policies, it led to huge changes in which wines China imported and where Australian wines were sold.
In April this year, Australia agreed to a pause in the World Trade Organization dispute with China on the tariffs, while China completed a four month review of the tariffs.
In August, China backed down on tariffs of barley and now negotiations are underway for the wine. But in the meantime, Chinese demand for wine has dropped and South Africa, among others, has filled the void of lost Australian imports.
