Woolies champagne at a fiver sold out

A week after Woolworths introduced the cheapest champagne ever to go on sale in the UK, it has already sold out.

The high street chain started selling the bubbly, priced at just £5, as part of its Worthit! value range and it raced out of the 15 out-of-town stores stocking it, even though Woolworths put a one-per-customer rule on the product.

The company launched the bottom-priced bubbly after customer research identified that shoppers on a tight budget still wanted to buy luxury items. At £5, it cost less than half the price of the cheapest champagnes currently available – Tesco’s and Asda’s own-label ones at £10.74 a bottle. However, Woolworth’s managing director Tony Page claimed that champagne ‘can be produced cheaply and efficiently, so there is no reason why it can’t be sold at value prices’.

But anyone who didn’t manage to get a bottle and would now like to try it will have to wait as Woolworths said that it won’t be able to get any more bottles of the stuff before Christmas.
