Moderately alcoholic wines from Oxford Landing

Oxford Landing launches moderate alcohol wines that benefit from the UK new tax alcohol tax.

Wine brand Oxford Landing is launching its SunLIGHT range in the UK, offering popular grape varieties with lower alcohol than normal. The Chardonnay at 7% abv and a Shiraz at 8% abv are the varieties with the lowest alcohol. The lower alcohol means that the duty rate on the wines, that came into effect in August 2023, will be significantly reduced at £1.49 for the 8% Shiraz and £1.30 for the 7% Chardonnay, compared to the £2.67 for wines above 12.5%. abv

The current UK duty was not changed in this weeks Autumn Statement budget after speculation that it may rise again to help manage the ballooning UK debt. The changes in August 2023 saw most drinks duty level change according to the amount of alcohol in the bottle. Wines between 11.5% and 14.5% abv were exempt and fixed until the 1st February 2025 as if they were 12.5% abv with duty of £2.67/bottle. Wines below 11.5% get a better rate and decrease with the decreasing alcohol strength.
